The Coolerworx Top Mount Classic Pro Short Shifter for VW / Audi / Skoda / Seat with 02J, 02M or 02Q gearbox is a motorsport-oriented shifting system designed for vehicles with retrofitted transmissions as well as race cars and stripped-interior builds. Because this is a top-mount version, the gearshift cables must be rerouted so that they run inside the vehicle.
This configuration is particularly useful for gearbox conversions, for example when installing an 02M gearbox in a VW Golf II. It can also be used in vehicles originally equipped with compatible transmissions where a top-mounted solution is preferred, especially in competition cars or vehicles with a simplified interior.
The mechanism reduces shift throw by up to 40%, providing shorter and more direct gear changes with a sharper mechanical feel. This improves shifting feedback and makes gear selection more precise during demanding road or track driving.
The PRO version features an integrated self-centering spring, which keeps the lever reliably positioned in the center even during hard braking and fast cornering. This helps maintain consistent shifting feedback and supports accurate gear selection.
The shifter also includes an adjustable gear lock-out system for Reverse, 1/2 and 5/6. Screw-type stops allow precise adjustment, while a cable-operated pull-up collar releases the lock-out when required. This helps reduce the risk of accidentally selecting an incorrect gear during aggressive driving.
The main components are manufactured from 7075 aircraft-grade aluminium, while the base plate is made from 304 stainless steel. This material combination provides the rigidity, durability and reliability required for demanding motorsport use.
The shifter is developed in-house, CNC-machined and hand-assembled in Europe. Its design is tested by racing drivers under demanding conditions.
